  • Course
  • 30 Lessons

Are you struggling to find the perfect cast of colors for your next quilt? Does all the talk of color schemes just confuse you? Never fear, Lyric is here to make color theory easy to understand.

In this playful and entertaining course Lyric takes you on a tour through color theory, explaining each scheme with entertaining and easy to remember metaphors. Using hands-on, easy exercises, She helps you understand how colors relate to each other and how they function alone, or together, because color is ALL about relationships!
Which actors behave like friends when they are in a group?
Can one single color give an interesting monologue alone onstage?
Who is the Diva and who is the Sidekick when opposites attract?
Drama, drama, drama. There is always drama with a trio onstage.

It's ALL About Relationships!

The element of COLOR is all about relationships. No matter how true to yourself you try to be, you behave differently in a crowd full of strangers than you do with your two best friends. It’s all about how you feel around those people.

Color strikes your emotions first, bypassing your rational side. Colors effect how you feel! Consider for a moment the emotional way we use color in our language. We see red, feel blue, are green with envy, have a bit of a yellow streak, or are in a black mood.

Colors play on your emotions just like players on the stage. An actor can make us laugh in one scene and cry in the next without ever changing costume.

A New Tool for your Artist's Kit!

  • No new unfinished projects, just a new understanding of how color relationships that you can use in your next work!
  • No supply list, use what you have around the house.
  • Use any media you like! Paint, textiles, crayons! As long as it's colorful, it works!
  • Learn to use color intentionally, you already use it intuitively!

Name that Color Scheme!

Learn the basic vocabulary of color theory so that you can better articulate and understand WHY you love the colors you do. Expand your palette as you begin to see how and why different colors just don't look the same, depending on their relationships to the colors around them.

How This Course Works

This is an online on-demand workshop. You will read all lessons online and post your work for feedback in each lesson.

You can share your pictures and also get feedback from your classmates. The more you contribute, the livelier class will be. Lyric will pop in to give feedback on each picture posted. This platform provides a safe space for a lively and sharing creative community to explore without judgement and competition.

Just like in a live classroom, you'll be able to see your fellow students work and discuss how things are going. You'll get encouragement and instruction from Lyric on all the work you post.

Supplies consist of things you already have at hand so you won't be time or money shopping for things you might not use again. The most important supply is an adventurous willingness to explore, grow, and play as you learn to see and create within the framework of abstract design. Doodles will be scribbled, eyes and minds will be opened, and fun will be had. Won't you join us?

                                                            Frequently asked questions

You’ve got questions. We’ve got answers.

How much interaction is there from the teacher?

Lyric will comment on each posted assignment and there can be a lot of extensive back and forth in this course. Thus the cost. The more you post, the more you get out of the class. Make sure to read comments on other students work as well. There is as much to learn from each other as from the course work.

How much time will the class take?

You can spend as much or as little time as you wish in this course but as with everything worth doing, you will get much or out of it if you put more into it.

How long do I have access to the course?

Once you've enrolled and paid, you are guaranteed access to the course material for one year. So devour it all in one weekend or take things slow. It's your choice! (You'll likely have access to it for MUCH longer but nothing in life is guaranteed forever.)

Do I need to know how to draw?

NO!  We will be using pen and paper and paint or colored fabric for most of the exercises.  Lyric will show you exactly what to do. It's easy. Promise! You can use any media you want for this course.

Does this course require special supplies?

If you own a sketchbook, use it. If not, plain paper is great! Us whatever your favorite medium is to create your studies. Box of crayons or colored pencils?  Yes!  Acrylic on board? Great! Cloth and thread? Wonderful! Collage paper and glue? Fabulous!

What do I need to know about using a computer?

You'll need to photograph or scan your assignments and save them as a jpeg. You can upload your pictures from your computer or devise to the online lesson.

What if I'm unhappy with my purchase?

Because all the content is immediately available to you, I do not offer refunds. I do want you to be happy though, so email me and we can talk. Lyric@lyrickinard.com.
